To the editor:
Isn’t it about time we citizens on Bainbridge did something about climate change? Our per capita emissions are higher than the rest of the county (affluence leads to larger houses, more cars) and certainly more than Seattle (due to our local utility’s reliance on fossil fuels). This fact should sadden all of us.
Our cars are a major source of our emissions and we have all seen ever-increasing traffic. We need more people biking and walking for transportation (not just exercise) and creative use of our bus system. The upcoming voter initiative is desperately needed if we are going to make biking, rolling and walking safer and more inviting — and actually catch up with what other responsible communities are doing.
Unfortunately, we have the usual “yes, buts” when so many proposals are offered to reduce emissions. The trail system has to be perfect, meet all needs and we hear the constant chant that no trees can be cut. The biggest threat to our trees is climate change and if we get a few more summers like we had this year, tree die-off will be a major problem. We may very well see trees cut along roads simply because they pose a danger to motorists. Let’s stop with the excuses — do our share and act now.
No, it won’t be perfect according to everyone’s criteria, but it will do so much to address our over-reliance on automobiles and lessen our emissions. Let’s pass Prop. 1 and take some pride in acting responsibly.
