To the editor:
Regarding the “new police station” proposals still under consideration by the city (BI Review, April 4), I was under the mistaken impression that the 2015 landslide “no” vote on the $15 million bond for a new public safety building (which was to contain a new police station and courthouse) put a total kibosh on this expensive and unnecessary project.
I have heard no complaints from fellow citizens about the ability of our finest to keep up with all the crime on the island when operating out of their homely quarters on Winslow Way.
Aside from not being needed, it is likely the facility will be built larger than is necessary, this to be followed by a prompt demand to fill those desks and garage with more officers and cruisers.
Thus, unless crime statistics support the need, I think the discussion for now should continue to be focused on whether we need a facility as opposed to where it should go.
