We need to tear down roadblocks to voting | Letter to the editor

To the editor:

Congratulations, Washington state voters, for your high turnout for our Primary Election this year!

Before that election I helped hold a banner saying, “Please VOTE.” I heard horns and many “Thank you’s” from people in a celebratory mood. It’s like they were saying, “Yes, I will vote and I will make a difference!”

I am happy I live in a state that has mail-in ballots and drop boxes, too. Unfortunately, many states have voting roadblocks. They must follow Washington’s lead and set up a similar system soon for our Presidential Election this year.

It is inexcusable, even fraudulent, that many states prevent authorized citizens from voting.

Wisconsin citizens were forced this year to take the risk of contacting COVID-19 or to not vote. Many of them had requested a primary ballot but hadn’t received it in time in for that election. Republican leaders are setting up many roadblocks, especially for people of color. (How disgraceful!)

Our democracy depends on all of our rights to vote!
