Bainbridge Island’s John Adams’ “Mystery” received the Juror’s Choice award at the recent Northwinds Art Center Alchemy of the Abstract Exhibition in Port Townsend.

“I am very honored to receive this award,” Adams said.

Adams began studying art formally at age 12, and enjoyed painting seascapes and mountains which continue to provide inspiration for his work.

He graduated from Stetson University in Florida with a BA in studio arts.

After that, he worked his way west to Colorado, working as a carpenter, river guide, screen-printer and watercolorist.

Since settling in the Seattle area in 1985, he has pursued an independent career in the arts.

The event’s juror, Mike McCollum, boasts an academic career that is long and commendable.

He spent 26 years at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) as a professor of art, five years as dean of the Fine and Performing Arts School there as well and five years as academic dean at Cornish College of Arts in Seattle.
