Bainbridge Island favorite Judith Reynolds Brown will visit Eagle Harbor Book Company at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 24 to read from her latest book, “When Sorrow is Joy.”
It will be her last public reading, according to the author.
This new work of fiction is based on Brown’s own high school years in the 1940s and how her connection with an organized community — in her case, a church youth group — helped her gain confidence and maturity.
Some high school and college students feel socially isolated and miserable. Others are successful at convincing the world that they have their own personal tiger by the tail.
Hope, the heroine of “When Sorrow is Joy,” endures aspects of both of these states and this story weaves in both of these views. Brown closes the book with scenes of Hope’s experience immediately after college in two work camps, one in Yugoslavia and one in Finland, when singing music pulls her through.
Brown is the author of “Turkish Wedding: Once There Was, Once There Wasn’t.”
