BDC faculty hit the stage
What do dedicated dance instructors – those who nurture young ones’ talent from the time of their initial, sweet-slippered foray into first position – do outside class?
They dance. And this weekend, Bainbridge Dance Center celebrates their accomplishments with its second fall faculty showcase, a diverse production featuring choreography and performance by BDC faculty as well as companies they direct.
Faculty members BryAnn Bingham, Steve Casteel, Kristen Legg, Jill Leversee, Gary Reed, and Kiplinn Sagmiller will present works from their repertory. Participating companies include OaklanDrive, directed by Jill Leversee and Marlo Martin, and Redd Legg Dance, directed by Kristen Legg.
Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 13 and 3 p.m. Sept. 14 at Bainbridge Performing Arts.

The production is appropriate for families; some material is likely of interest to children ages eight and older.
Kathe Fraga goes solo
On the topic of what the creatively inclined do outside their day jobs, gallery owners Jeff and Kathe Fraga are for the first time showcasing Kathe’s work in a solo show.
A sampling of five pieces from the “French Wallpaper” series was up last December to help celebrate the gallery’s fifth anniversary; now, viewers can get a full measure of the series, including new work along the same theme.
Think vibrant vintage, or a grande dame’s attic treasure trove. Inspired by embroidery, oriental carpets, and the painted, peeling walls of an old Parisian mansion, the work screams “Kathe.”

New kids on the block
There’s always room for more creativity, and commerce. Beginning this Saturday, area youth are invited to sell their arts and crafts, produce and plants at the Bainbridge Youth Market, which gets under way at 9 a.m. Sept. 13 and will run each Saturday until Oct. 11.
The market will be set up in the lot on Madrone Lane above Mora Ice Cream, adjacent to Island Fitness and just steps from the Farmers Market.
Adults who’d like to participate in the Youth Market’s garden excess exchange are also invited to bring plant divisions and excess produce, strictly for trade.

Catch a canine on camera
Or your kitty, or bird. Come on, you know she’s the cutest one. And hurry, because Sept. 15 is the entry deadline for the third annual “Picture Your Pet” photo contest, to benefit PAWS of Bainbridge Island.
Complete contest rules and entry forms are at www.pawsbainbridge.org. Photo display and voting will begin at 11 a.m. Sept. 20, in the Town & Country parking lot. The event occurs in conjunction with Town & Country Market’s annual mustard tasting and hot dog barbecue, also to benefit PAWS.
