Bainbridge High School drama students will present their rendition of the classic comedy “Lady Windermere’s Fan” by the legendary Oscar Wilde, opening at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1 at the high school.

“It’s a Victorian comedy of manners and mores,” said Barbara Hume, language arts and drama teacher at BHS. “It’s a story about reconciliation, a mother trying to reconnect with her long lost daughter, but there’s lots of comic relief.”

Much of the humor in the play arises from Wilde’s lampooning of Victorian social values of the day, something at which he notoriously excelled.

“He’s parodying all of the social mores of the day,” Hume said. “He’s exposed the fact that everyone is flawed. He exposes the truth about our own weaknesses.”

Hume said that the intricacies required to properly perform a period piece did not discourage the students.

Quite the opposite, in fact.

“They’re thoroughly engaged,” she said. “It’s really great because the kids get a stage venue. A lot of the costumes have come from New York on loan from Gateway Theatre School. Some have come from Ovation! and some from Bainbridge Performing Arts. It’s such a collective collaboration on the island.”

“Lady Windermere’s Fan” will for play for two weekends at Bainbridge High, with shows at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1 and 8 as well as Saturday Nov. 2 and 9.

Tickets are available at the door. The cost is $7 for students and $10 for adults.
