Bainbridge in Bloom features artists, lectures, gardens

Hajni Joslyn is an artist and her process for developing a garden is the same as the one she uses to create one of her watercolors. Or a tapestry bag. Or a mosaic.

“I start out with an idea in my mind, but then the plants — or the painting — starts talking to me,” she said of her intuitive, fluid process. “It’s a dialogue.”

These running dialogues have become a 25-year conversation and, frankly, a living documentary of where these heart-to-hearts have led.

“She goes in cycles. For a while it was birdhouses,” said her husband Marc Joslyn, pointing to the wooden chickadee house perched above the garden. “Then it was wind chimes, so she went to Boeing and got some remnant pipes and made a bunch of chimes. When she gets going, she’s like a tornado.”

Much has changed on their two-and-a-half acre property since 1994, the first time it was featured on the Bainbridge in Bloom Tour. The mature garden is now graced with a small orchard with cherry, pear, apple and apricot trees; a Zen garden; several water features; gazebos; a fenced vegetable garden where Hajni also moved her cabbage roses to protect them from the deer; a woodland path and a chicken coop.

Hajnalka Studio, where Hajni does most of her painting and craftwork, also will be open during the tour. Six other artists will be showing their work in the studio and on the grounds.

Friday, July 9, Patron Day:

* Self-drive today only. Ticket is $65.00, which provides unlimited access to gardens all weekend

* Tickets to the Bloom Evening Garden Party at the Bloedel Reserve (6:00-9:30 p.m.) available for purchase for $110.00.

* Chauffeured special Benefactor package, limited to 30 participants, available for $350.00. Includes the Bloom Evening Garden Party and a luncheon with horticulturalist, Dan Hinkley, at a waterfront estate.

Saturday and Sunday, July 10-11

Tickets are $35.00. Children under 12 are $10.00.

Visitors must park at Woodward Middle School and board a bus to the gardens.

Three easy routes will provide quick and easy bus transport

If visitors prefer to bicycle to the gardens, a Bike the Bloom ticket may be purchased for $27.00. Bike racks are at each garden.
