Celebrate summer with neighbors and friends at two Bainbridge Island Park & Recreation District “Fay Bay” beach bonfires complete with stories, singing and roasted marshmallows.

This week’s waning gibbous moon offers optimum viewing of Dinoflagellates in the water. Say what? Dinoflagellates are microscopic organisms that emit a flash of LED light, scientifically known as bioluminescense, but more commonly referred to as phosphorescence.

Shannon Buxton, of Metro Park & Recreation District, will lead the bonfire, which runs from 8-9:30 p.m. tonight in the fire ring at Fay Bainbridge Park. Dress for Northwest weather, she said, and bring a camp chair or blanket if you like. Marshmallows and roasting sticks will be provided. Other handy items to bring include a flashlight, hot drinks and guitars for those who want to sing around the campfire.

“It will be a relaxed way to connect with folks and bring community to this place,” Buxton said.

On Aug. 12, the early-rising full moon over Seattle will lend an enchanting glow to the second bonfire gathering.

Plan B in case it rains is to meet under the picnic shelter.

“We’re hoping for a warm clear night,“ she said. Indeed.
