April 3, 2013. Remember that date. It marked the introduction of the Bainbridge Island Senior Community Center Class Acts program, a new way of informing current and future senior center members of the many activities and classes available to them.

Manager Sue Barrington welcomed the large audience filling Huney Hall at the Waterfront Park Community Center. The presentation of new and ongoing Bainbridge Island Senior Community Center Class programs began with the playing of a clip from a recent TED performance. TED is a collection of appearances by today’s most innovative thinkers and entrepreneurs. The programs will be shown and discussed at the Senior Center Mondays, from 10 to 11 a.m., beginning May 6.

Other new classes, some recently begun and others coming soon, were described and in some cases demonstrated with attendees invited to join in. Among these was a lively “Samba in 10 Minutes” Zumba demonstration that left participants panting but happy, judging from their smiles and the audience applause. The community center will be offering two Zumba classes on Fridays, starting May 3. Zumba Gold Toning will run from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m. and Zumba Gold will be from 2 to 2:45 p.m. Instructor Pamela McCann also teaches an Aquatic Zumba class in the Nakata pool Saturday mornings.

Charlene Moore, a certified Feldenkrais practitioner, as well as our talented Evergreen Singers director, demonstrated her new Mindfulness in Action class with the entire audience taking part in an exercise to increase neck movement without pain. Mindfulness in Action is on Tuesdays from 1:15 to 2:30 p.m., through June 25.

There were also demonstrations for several popular on-going classes, including Line Dancing (Mondays, 10:30-11:30 a.m.), Tai Chi (Wednesdays, 11-11:30 a.m.), Stay Strong Fitness (Thursdays, 8:45-9:45 a.m.), and Liberation Laughter (10 a.m. to noon).

Teachers and facilitators of other Bainbridge Island Senior Community Center classes and activities, both new and on-going, talked briefly about what they do. New offerings, some already begun and others coming soon, include Adventures in Travel, The Creative Crone, Lunch & Learn and Stories of a Lifetime.

Adventures in Travel is an opportunity for members who have been to interesting places to share their photos and impressions with others. Those attending gain insights into places they are planning to visit and discover new ones to put on their future travel lists. Bob Leik initiated the program with a photo talk on his recent trip to New Zealand and Susan Callan covered last October’s Senior Center trip to Ireland. Other places and experiences have and will be featured Fridays from 10 to 11 a.m.

The Creative Crone supports the inner artist in all of us. Sue Barrington, with 20 years of teaching art at the college level, will help class members find and release their artistic side. Watch for this opportunity to express yourself in creative new ways, beginning June 7 and running until Aug. 30, Fridays from 9:30 to 11 a.m.

Also on the creative side is another new class called Stories of a Lifetime. Participants will write and edit stories from experiences in their lives, which will then be read and video recorded for others to enjoy. Stories of a Lifetime begins Tuesday, June 4, from 9:30 to 11 a.m.

Lunch and Learn, the informative weekly speakers series that keeps members up-to-date on what is happening in and beyond Bainbridge Island, will be resuming Thursdays on May 9, from 1:15 to 2 p.m. Note that this is a later time slot than the previous series. The program will continue every Thursday through June 6.

Also on Thursdays, for those interested in what’s going on in the world, is News Flow, an informal gathering of members to discuss and express their views on current events. Jay Schwartzman leads the group in the Fireside Room from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

If you come for this, have something to eat after the program, then stay for Lunch and Learn. You are guaranteed to become one of the best informed citizens on Bainbridge Island.
