Bainbridge Island celebrated young people’s creativity during the 11th annual Student Art Contest March 6 at the Pavilion.

Young residents and students in kindergarten through high school competed for first, second and third place awards in eight different categories.

This year’s show drew 225 entries, said Dinah Satterwhite, founder and manager of the contest.

The Best of Show decision was a difficult one for the judges this year, she said, but Odyssey School eighth grader Kristan Franzen took home the grand prize, including $150 in cash, art classes at Oil & Water Arts, movie passes to Bainbridge Cinemas, gift certificates and an achievement certificate, for her large and detailed watercolor painting, “Turtle on Black Sand.”

Anna Teiche, a Bainbridge High School freshman, won first place in the contest’s newest category, RecycleArt. She created a dress out of newspaper, paper scraps, and Target shopping bags. The judges affectionately called it the “Target Dress,” although Anna’s official title was “Metaphor.”  It was one of two full-sized dresses made from recycled materials that Anna entered this year, each displayed on tall dress forms.

First place winners in each category received $40 in cash; second place winners; received $20 and third place winners received $10.  Honorable mention certificates were also awarded. Every student who entered the contest received a special ribbon at the end of the award ceremony.

The Best of Show piece and other select pieces are on display at an exhibit throughout March at the Verksted Gallery on Front Street in Poulsbo.
