Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra kicks off its latest season with resplendent works by three of England’s finest composers at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12 and 7:30 and 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 13 at Bainbridge Performing Arts.
William Walton wrote “Crown Imperial: Coronation March” for the crowning of Edward VIII in May 1937. When Edward VIII abdicated, the work was instead performed for his younger brother, George VI.
Vaughan Williams wrote his “Piano Concerto in C” for pianist Harriet Cohen. Performed with the BSO by guest soloist Cristina Valdés, this virtuosic concerto pays homage to Bach while also expressing a percussive and exuberant energy.
The program will then conclude with Edward Elgar’s “Enigma Variations” in which each variation is inspired by and dedicated to Elgar’s friends or loved ones.
Considered one of today’s foremost interpreters of contemporary music, Valdés is currently an artist in residence at the University of Washington. She has performed across four continents and in venues such as Lincoln Center, Le Poisson Rouge, Miller Theatre, Jordan Hall and the Kennedy Center.
An avid chamber musician and collaborator, she has toured extensively with the Bang On a Can All Stars, and has performed with the Seattle Chamber Players, the Mabou Mines Theater Company, the Parsons Dance Company and Antares. She has also been a featured performer with the Seattle Symphony’s Chamber Series.
A pre-concert chat is offered on Sunday, Nov. 13 at 2:15 p.m. Tickets, $21 for adults and $18 for seniors, students, military and teachers, may be purchased online at www.bainbridgeperformingarts.org, by phone at 206-842-8569 or in person at BPA (200 Madison Ave. North).
