Your weekend has finally arrived, just in time to offer a brief respite before the florists, chocolate makers and the Hallmark company start clawing away at your wallet next week.
On Friday at 7:30 p.m. get yourself to Bainbridge Performing Arts for “[Title of Show],” which, yes, is actually the name. Jeff and hunter are two struggling writers who hear about a new musical theatre festival. With nothing to lose the pair decide to try to create something new with the help of their friends. Jeff suggests they write about figuring out what to write about. Tickets are $29 for adults, $24 for seniors, $21 for students, youth and military. Tickets can be purchased in person at BPA, over the phone at 206-842-8569 and online at www.bainbridgeperformingarts.org.
The theoretical physicist Lawrence Krauss once said, “Every atom in your body came from a star that exploded. And, the atoms in your left hand probably came from a different star than your right hand. It really is the most poetic thing I know about physics: You are all stardust.” Celebrate the romance of Valentine’s Day early on Saturday by joining astronomer Dave Fong to hear humorous takes on ancient greek star lore. The planetarium show “Star Stories: Twisted Tales of Love and Loss” is at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Edwin E. Ritchie Observatory at Battle Point Park. Admission is free to members of the Battle Point Astronomical Association and a $2 donation is suggested for nonmembers and $5 for families. There will also be a special kids show, “Gravity – The Ultimate Downer” from 4 – 6 p.m. with Dr. Erica. If the sky is clear astronomers will also be on hand with telescopes.
On Sunday, head on over to the Treehouse Café at 7 p.m. to watch The Press Gang, a traditional Irish music quartet from Portland, Maine featuring longtime Bainbridge Island resident Hanz Araki. The Press Gang fuses the talents of squeezebox player Christian “Junior” Stevens, fiddler Alden Robinson, flute-player and vocalist Araki, and guitarist Owen Marshall into a high-octane musical partnership. The quartet blends their skill and fluency in traditional Irish music with their curiosity and aptitude for other styles. The result is a unique sound; at once energetic and sensitive, innovative and reverent. Tickets are $18 per person, available at www.treehousebainbridge.com.
