Best Bets for Jan. 27-29 | The Bainbridge Blab

The decision has arrived once again. How do you spend your weekend? What do you do with your 48 hours of blissful escape from responsibility? Do you begin a project around the house? Maybe clean out the gutters? Overthrow the proletariat? Perhaps; but here are our suggestions.

Spend your Friday showing a little hometown pride by cheering for the BHS Spartans as they go head to head against O’Dea and Holy Names Academy. The Spartans girls basketball team will take on Holy Names at 7:30 p.m. followed by the Spartans boys against O’dea at 8:30 p.m. You’re not gonna wanna miss this double header as it’s the second-to-last home game of the regular season.

Get your fancy on at the One Starry Night Gala Auction at 5 p.m. Saturday over at Wing Point Golf & Country Club. The event is a costume ball (which is optional) or black tie affair, so remember to wear your finest storm trooper outfit, or a suit. It’s really your call. If you’re thinking that the $125 ticket price might be too steep, first consider the fact that funds from the soiree will go to Bainbridge Performing Arts. Get tickets here.

Alternatively, you can swap the $125 cover charge for a much more reasonable $15 cover by making a jaunt over to the Treehouse Cafe for Robert Burns night on Saturday at 7 p.m. Join in the festivities by celebrating the birthday of the Scotland’s “ploughman poet,” surrounded by tunes from Celtic Magic, haggis appetizers, and readings of Burns’ poetry. Come and join the celebration of the man who in 2009 was declared the “Greatest Scot,” beating out William “Freedom” Wallace. Get your tickets here.

On Sunday, you can wind your weekend down by making your way down to the Eagle Harbor Book Company at noon for a brainy spin on Sunday brunch with author Will Schwalbe. In “Books for Living” Schwalbe invites us along on his quest for books that speak to the specific challenges of living in our modern world, with all its noise and distractions. But If the Robert Burns night festivities leave you feeling like noon might be too early, you can still make your way down to Eagle Harbor Book Company and catch Judith Aftergut as she talks about her book, “Everything They Wanted” at 3 p.m. “Everything They Wanted” is Aftergut’s memoir about place: how the ice in Glacier Bay shapes the landscape and how a place shapes the people who live near it. Beginning with the story of Joe and Muz Ibach, who lived over a period of more than twenty summers in a tiny cabin near Reid Glacier, it is one woman’s exploration of Glacier Bay and of what was so special about these two people.
