Grace Church hosts ‘Songs and Stories of Compassion and Comfort’

The Agate Pass Threshold Choir will perform a special free concert, “Songs and Stories of Compassion and Comfort,” an afternoon of calming, encouraging songs intended to be uplifting, at Grace Church (8595 NE Day Road) at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 24.

“If you haven’t heard of The Agate Pass Threshold Choir, it’s a pretty special organization,” said Grace spokeswoman Lindsay Masters. “It is one of many Threshold Choirs worldwide that send small groups to sing a capella at the bedsides of people who are dying, to offer solace and comfort.”

During the concern, the choir will sing, talk about how it serves, and share information about how people can request its presence for a friend or loved one, Masters said.

The concert was arranged, Masters said, primarily thanks to the work of islander Marilyn Price-Mitchell, a well-known developmental psychologist, author, speaker, and educator who has done work with local schools, who learned about the choir and invited them to sing at her own husband’s bedside during his last days.

“The experience made such an impact that Marilyn joined the choir herself and has now become an active member and spokesperson,” Masters said.

“Death and dying are experiences that many of us hold at a distance, yet at some point so many of us will find ourselves nurturing a loved one who is going through that process,” she added “This choir is doing such a meaningful service, and I know that the community would love Marilyn’s story and value a chance to learn more about the group’s work.”
