Jherek Bischoff, island-grown composer and musician, has unveiled his third album “Cistern.”

The classical record was partly inspired by Bischoff’s time spent experimenting with a cavernous, empty water tank he discovered during an artist residency. The echo of the 2 million gallon reservoir is paralleled by the ambiance of the collection.

Bischoff was the 2012 recipient of Arts & Humanities Bainbridge’s Amy Award for Emerging Artists.

His recent release was reviewed by the online music magazine Pitchfork, receiving a positive 6.8 out of 10.

The reviewer notes that Cistern “encourages listeners to drop down into their own mind, a safe space in the dark where they are comfortably alone.”

The album is also applauded for never lulling its audience to sleep; it instead finds ways to interrupt repeated patterns with further layers and sounds to avoid the drowsy cycle often found in classical music.
