The jacket. The hair. The angst.

One of a trio of roles that secured his legend status — along with loner Cal Trask in “East of Eden” (1955) and surly ranch hand Jett Rink in “Giant” (1956) — Dean’s turn as Jim Stark has become an avatar of teenage disillusionment.
Filmed in the then-recently introduced CinemaScope format, and directed by Nicholas Ray (“They Live by Night” and “In a Lonely Place,” among others), it offers both timeless social commentary and, by focusing on suburban, middle-class teens, a dramatic alternative to previous films depicting delinquents in almost entirely urban slum environments.
Though Dean died in a car crash before the film was released, it is his most celebrated role.
The movie also stars Sal Mineo and Natalie Wood.
