As part of our cultural activities in our teaching curriculum, the Bainbridge Mandarin Learning Center is celebrating the Lantern Festival at 3-5 p.m. Feb. 28 at Bainbridge Island Grange Hall, 10340 Madison Ave.
The Lantern Festival is the 15th day of the first month of the lunar calendar. It is the last day of the New Year’s Celebration. It is also called the Lover’s Day. Faculty will explain the tradition and custom behind the celebration. Teachers will prepare authentic Chinese snacks for all to taste and enjoy. Two tables will be set up for anyone who wants to learn to make a simple lantern.
The program includes a lion’s dance accompanied by cymbal, gong and drums; Legend of the Festival; students’ performance in Chinese from Wilkes, Ordway, Blakely, Woodword/Sakai and West Sound Academy adults class; Jue Pu, board member and her Chamber Music Group will perform Chinese music using Western instruments, and a short example of Chinese opera singing will be performed by teacher Shuang Chiu Wang; and games competition for students and families.
