A new exhibit that recounts the stories of Asian Pacific Americans has opened at the Kitsap County Historical Society & Museum.

The Smithsonian exhibit “I Want the Wide American Earth: An Asian Pacific American Story” will be on display at the museum in Bremerton through Aug. 29.

The theme explores the peoples of Asia and the Pacific Islands who migrated to the U.S. beginning in the 1840s. Their problems and successes as they adapted to their new country and environment are detailed in eight posters. Topics include are their economic roles, exclusion, citizenship, activism and their impact on American food traditions.

Kitsap County has historically been host to people from the Pacific region. Migrants from Hawaii and other Pacific Islands, Asia and Southeast Asia have come with their hopes and expectations. Photographs, letters and newspaper articles describe their lives, problems and successes as they adapted to their new country and the Pacific Northwest.

This poster exhibit was created by the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center and the Smithsonian institution Traveling Exhibition Service. It was supported by a grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.

The museum is located at 280 Fourth St., Bremerton, and is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.
