Curated by Tova Gannana, the three-film “No Direction Home” series will take over the silver screen at the historic Lynwood Theater for three Thursdays in July.
First, on July 13, catch “Something Wild” (1961). Not to be confused with 1986 Jonathan Demme film with the great soundtrack, this Jack Garfein flick stars Carroll Baker, Ralph Meeker and Mildred Dunnock. It follows a young New York City college student who, after being brutally raped, is taken in and held captive by a mechanic who witnessed her suicide attempt on the Manhattan Bridge.
Then, on July 20, the series will continue with “News from Home” (1976), an avant-garde documentary directed by Chantal Akerman which consists of long takes of locations in New York City set to Akerman’s voice over as she reads letters her mother sent her between 1971 and 1973, when the director lived in the city.
The series concludes on July 27 with “Losing Ground” (1982), arguably the first feature-length drama directed by a black American woman. The movie is a comedy-drama about a black female philosophy professor and her insensitive, philandering and flamboyant artist husband as they struggle through a marital crisis.
