How can we inspire students to become creative problem solvers and active citizens?
To kickstart a discussion that might lead to answers, Raising Resilience and Bainbridge Island School District’s Multicultural Advisory Council invites parents, educators, students and other interested community members for a screening of the award-winning documentary “If You Build It” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 24 at Bainbridge Cinemas.
The uplifting film, directed by Patrick Creadon, follows designer-activists Emily Pilloton and Matthew Miller who, in 2010, moved to Bertie County, the poorest county in North Carolina, to set up Studio H, a forward-thinking shop class designed to help students learn to not just build “stuff,” but to build things that help enrich their community and their lives.
“What we learned is that schools need to be what we as parents and educators and students decide they should be, that we as a nation are relying far too heavily on online education, that real change can’t occur unless there is shared ownership in the new solutions that are being created to address our most challenging problems,” said Creadon. “And, perhaps most importantly, that there is a designer inside each of us that just needs a little encouragement to grow and develop.”
Among other guests, also in attendance will be Chelsea Minola from Grain, who worked with Emily Piloton on a Studio H project in Seattle, Jeremy Loerch of Alchemy Arts, BIDS’s Preston Michaels, members of the Bainbridge Island Artisan Resource Network and several local architects. Inspired by students and designers from North Carolina, participants will brainstorm improving the school experience on Bainbridge Island.
The event is recommended for adults and teens 13 and older.
