Bainbridge Island’s historic and quirky Scotch Broom Festival will be revived next week.

And like the “festivals” of bygone years, the always impromptu event will culminate in a fierce competition of tiddlywinks between a member of the Kiwanis and a member of the Bainbridge Island Downtown Association in front of the Town & Country on Winslow Way. Two contestants will enter, but only one will triumph.

The victor of the tiddlywinks tournament will have the honor of selecting a Scotch Broom Queen randomly from the crowd. Bearing a crown of scotch broom, the queen — a random man, woman or child — will then parade down a short stretch of Winslow Way, leading a horde of islanders behind.

In keeping with the tradition of the event, the actual time and date is being kept by only those in the know to know.

Those attending are encouraged to discretely conceal their scotch broom, and festival intentions, until the signal is given to begin festivities.
