A group of islanders have generated an ipetition to try to convince the city of Bainbridge Island to reduce the speed limit on a portion of Madison Avenue NE between Torvanger and Phelps roads.
“With homes immediately adjacent to Madison Ave, children at play, and multiple pedestrians and cyclists on the road shoulder, the 35 mph speed limit is unreasonably fast and hazardous to neighborhood residents, pedestrians and cyclists,” the petition reads.
Further, “the road has become a ‘short-cut’ for non-resident commuters avoiding Highway 305” who “exponentially increase road traffic volume at rush hours and routinely exceed the posted 35 mph limit.”
Residents are asking the city to drop the limit down to 25 mph, which “will add only seconds to the journey” through the neighborhood while increasing “the safety, security and welfare of residents.”
Since the petition went up on Monday, it’s gained 40 signatures of a hopeful 1,000.
