Grammy Award-winning multi-instrumentalist John McEuen, founding member of the famed Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, will bring his renowned stylings to Bainbridge Island for a special one-night-only house show at 7 p.m. Monday, July 2.
As the song goes: “Is it folk or rock or country?”
It seems like everybody cared except John McEuen.
The “String Wizard” defied all musical rules of the day by collaborating with the diverse likes of Maybelle Carter, Earl Scruggs, Doc Watson and others to record the first “Will the Circle Be Unbroken” album, released in 1972.
Initiated by John and produced by his brother, Bill McEuen, the platinum-selling album tied together two diverse generations of musicians and became “indisputably one of the most important recordings ever to come out of Nashville” (Rolling Stone, 1972).
Beyond the “Circle” albums, McEuen has a rich history of preserving and producing original folk and acoustic music. He has recorded more than 40 albums and just released his sixth solo album, titled “Made in Brooklyn.”
“Just as ‘Circle’ reached across lines of acoustic, Bluegrass and country, and appealed to folks from all walks of life, I believe ‘Made in Brooklyn’ will too,” McEuen said.
Additionally, McEuen’s recent book “The Life I’ve Picked, a Banjo Picker’s Nitty Gritty Journey,” now in its third printing, is a collection of stories and reflection from his musical journey beginning in Garden Grove, California, working at Disneyland with Steve Martin, his time working on many productions, including Steve Martin’s “The Crow.”
The Bainbridge show will take place outdoors, at the home of John and Dee Eisenhauers. Tickets are $25 each. To purchase and/or learn more about the show, call or text Wendy Tyner at 206-669-3931.
The audience is invited to bring a picnic dinner and “low concert chairs.”
