The Island School presents “Paved with Gold: All We Could Carry” tonight in Webster Hall.

The performance is a series of vignettes based on immigration stories, and some came directly from the families of the Island School’s fifth-grade class. Topics include the Japanese-American internment camps at Manzanar and Papa Doc’s Haiti.

Now in its fourth year, “Paved With Gold” tells the unique story of this new group of talented performers. The free show is 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 23.

Students have investigated written and oral immigration stories and have written songs and dramatic pieces based on their interpretations. With the help of their teacher Mike Derzon their lyrics have been set to music, while teacher and historian Betsy Carroll has guided the development of their stories and characters. Director/choreographer Pamela Dharamsey Lee has shaped their works into theatrical pieces by incorporating dance, drama, story and song.
