Library OKs Plan, Calls For Bids
An architect’s plan, which it is hoped will be within available financing, was accepted by the board of directors of Bainbridge Public Library last week.
The architect, John H. Rudolph, Battle Point, immediately called for construction bids.
James F. Hodges, Port Madison, chairman of the building committee, said he hoped bids could be analyzed by mid-June. If the low bidder is within the financial framework of library funds, construction would be started immediately with fall as the target period for completion.
“I have given up on our previous goal of a Labor Day opening,” Mr. Hodges said.
Nike ‘Firing’ On AF Day
The public will be able to witness a simulated missile firing at the Armed Forces Day “open house” staged by the Island’s Nike unit Saturday.
Lieut. James C. Cercy, newly-appointed commander of Battery A, the Island’s “never miss” unit, said the public is invited to attend a guided tour of the battery’s two establishments from 9 until 11 o’clock Saturday morning.
Following the national theme for the 1961 observance of Armed Forces Day — “Power for Peace” — the “open house” program calls for an orientation talk in the fire control area at Eagledale, south of McDonald School, from 9 to 9:20 o’clock.
At 9:30 o’clock, there will be a simulated missile firing at the Island Center launcher area on the High School Road. Those who do not wish to drive their own vehicles from Eagledale to Island Center may use an Army bus which will make the trip for their convenience.
