Uber idea gets sideswiped | THE BAINBRIDGE BLAB

Outside the newsroom, stories are constantly developing independent of deadlines.

Outside the newsroom, stories are constantly developing independent of deadlines.

In our last edition, we saw that firsthand with one of our front-page pieces, “Bainbridge gets its first Uber driver.”

When we sent the paper to press at 11 a.m. Tuesday (two days earlier than usual because of the holiday) — and Don Hazeltine was planning to pick up his first customers just an hour later.

However, by 1:45 p.m., the situation had drastically changed.

Hazeltine, who jumped through all sorts of hoops to get his Uber registration, learned that he would not be able to operate on Bainbridge.

“They said no one in Kitsap County is licensed to drive an Uber,” his wife, Lora Jansson said. “It’s not legal.”

Hazeltine and Jansson are still trying to get to the bottom of the mess.

“Obviously, we had no idea,” Jansson said.

Last we heard, Hazeltine had gone down to city hall to find out if there is some way he can still drive people around the island. Jansson said they’ll also be looking into Lyft, another peer-to-peer ridesharing service.
