Weave — a nonprofit performing arts and education organization headquartered on Bainbridge Island — will present more than 10 concerts, workshops and open-mic sessions at Rolling Bay Hall in May.
The group previously hosted world-renowned West African musician, composer, arranger, teacher and choreographer Adama Bilorou Dembele for a two-day combined playbill of a concert and workshops.
The May lineup includes — in addition to several open mic/stage sessions — two concerts, a dance party and a two-day intensive music recording workshop for teens.
First, at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 3, catch Trio Brasileiro in concert.
Formed in 2011, Trio Brasileiro quickly made a name for itself as an ensemble worthy of international attention. And, after four recordings and successful tours through Europe plus North and South America, they are receiving more than their share of it. Among the many accolades, their 2017 recording with the brilliant Israeli clarinetist Anat Cohen, Rosa Dos Ventos, was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best World Music Album, and was named one of the top 20 jazz recordings of the year in the Downbeat Magazine Readers’ Poll.
Trio Brasileiro’s stunning virtuosity is matched with remarkable musicianship and a deep devotion to the language of music to achieve a compelling sound that shares equal parts understated subtlety and bone-deep groove. But it is their love of the traditional music of Brazil and the connection between brothers by birth and by bonds of friendship that create a very rare and profound beauty.
Half of the highly regarded Brazilian Choro ensemble, Caraivana, Trio Brasileiro includes the celebrated guitarist and full-time member of the award-winning Brazil Guitar Duo, Douglas Lora; one of Brazil’s finest mandolin virtuosos, Dudu Maia; and the master of Brazilian percussion and Hand Pan virtuoso, Alexandre Lora.
Tickets, $20 in advance or $25 at the door, are available now via www.brownpapertickets.com.
Then, at 5 p.m. Sunday, May 5, see Tony McManus and Julia Toaspern live on stage.
McManus has come to be recognized throughout the world as the leading guitarist in Celtic Music and was recently named one of the 50 most influential acoustic guitarists of all time by Guitar Player Magazine. From early childhood, his twin obsessions of traditional music and acoustic guitar have worked together to produce a startlingly original approach to this ancient art. In his hands the complex ornamentation normally associated with fiddles and pipes are accurately transferred to guitar in a way that preserves the integrity and emotional impact of the music.
Toaspern spent the past years gigging around Europe and the East Coast. She has played in Cuba and recorded in New York City, but she feels at home in the Scottish Highlands where she makes music, tends sheep, milks goats and is inspired by the clarity, even when its foggy.
As she sings of traveling she takes the audience along on the journey in an evening filled with songs and tunes. Her own folk jazz is mixed with Irish, Scottish and American roots in a vivid variety of desire and delight, longing and yearning.
Tickets, $20 in advance or $25 at the door, are likewise available now via www.brownpapertickets.com.
