Wild women, death for dinner at EHBC

Two regional authors to visit Bainbridge bookstore.

Two authors, one from Oregon and the other from Bainbridge Island, will visit Eagle Harbor Book Company to discuss their latest works this week.

Ruby McConnell, a writer, dancer and geologist from Eugene, Oregon will stop by the shop’s used book annex for a brown bag lunch at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 29 to talk about her book “A Woman’s Guide to the Wild.”

Trail mix and drinks will be provided; visit www.eagleharborbooks.com to RSVP.

For women who enjoy hiking, camping, backpacking and other outdoor recreation — or those inspired to start getting out there by Cheryl Strayed’s “Wild” — this book is the definitive guide to being a woman in the great outdoors.

This friendly, pragmatic and, at times, humorous handbook covers the matters of most concern to women, including feminine functions in the wilderness and how to deal with condescending men as well as the basics of wilderness survival tailored to women’s unique needs. It includes gear lists in addition to advice for camp setup, fire building, food and water, safety, weather and navigation.

McConnell’s published works include professional geologic papers, personal essays, dance reviews, short stories and her blog “Girl Gone Wild.” Her work has appeared in Misadventures Magazine, Oregon Quarterly, Midnight Muse, Seattle Backpackers, Birders Digest and Exiled in Eugene, among others. She also contributed text to “Her Story,” a dance work by the (Alex)andra Taylor Dance Company, which debuted in December 2012 in New York City.

Tessa Arlen, the Bainbridge-based author of “Death of a Dishonorable Gentleman,” will visit to celebrate the launch of her new mystery novel “Death Sits Down to Dinner” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 31.

Following on the heels of her successful first book, Arlen’s new book is filled with deceptions — both real and imagined — wrapped in a delightful Edwardian mystery set in London.

Lady Montfort returns in this second volume. She is thrilled to receive an invitation to a dinner party hosted by her close friend Hermione Kingsley, the patroness of England’s largest charity. Hermione has pulled together a select gathering to celebrate Winston Churchill’s 39th birthday. Some of the oldest families in the country have gathered to toast the dangerously ambitious and utterly charming First Lord of the Admiralty. But when the dinner ends, one of the gentlemen remains seated at the table, head down among the walnut shells littering the cloth and a knife between his ribs.

Summoned from Lyntwood, Mrs. Jackson helps her mistress trace the steps of suspects both upstairs and downstairs as Hermione’s household prepares to host a highly anticipated charity event. Determined to get to the bottom of things, Lady Montfort and Mrs. Jackson unravel the web of secrecy surrounding the bright whirlwind of London society, investigating the rich, well-connected and seeming do-gooders in a race against time to stop the murderer from striking again.
