This is our first news column, and we’d like to tell you about us, the American Legion, Colin Hyde Post 172. We’ve been on the “Rock” since 1942.

Our mission is: fostering a strong national security; taking care of veterans; mentoring the youth of our nation; and promoting patriotism and honor.

We have 164 members; veterans of World War II (23), Korea (24), Vietnam (75), Lebanon-Grenada (four), Panama (six), Persian Gulf (Iraq/Afghanistan) (26).

We meet twice a month. The first Friday of the month is to conduct official business (7:30 to 9 p.m.). The third Friday of the month is to discuss/plan projects to help not only our organization but the Island community. We’re located next to the fire station on Bucklin Hill Road going toward Lynwood Center.

To veterans: Please come to our meetings. “We have your back!”

Gary Sakuma is commander of American Legion Colin Hyde Post 172.
