All you need to know about commissioning a piece of custom jewelry

Custom jewelry design can be daunting for consumers who are more familiar with shopping for ready-made pieces.

Common misconceptions about pricing and complexity can easily lead jewelry lovers or well-meaning gift givers to stick with their preferences for “off-the-rack” jewelry. However, award-winning Bainbridge Island designer and jeweler Robin Callahan wants to dispel some of these misconceptions, encouraging more people to embrace the truly one-of-a-kind experience that comes with designing their own jewelry.

“I love doing custom work, and I wish more people would consider taking the time to explore it,” Robin says. “I believe one of the biggest reasons people shy away from custom jewelry is concern over costs, but in reality, custom work can be just as affordable as purchasing a ready-made piece. The difference is that you’re buying a piece that’s been custom-designed to your preferences, with the opportunity to influence every design choice along the way.”

From modest to luxurious – and everything in between

From $1,200 engagement rings to truly lavish, one-of-a-kind creations, Robin welcomes commissions of all kinds. Her commitment to supporting both large and small budgets ensures that the custom jewelry experience is accessible to everyone.

“Budget is always the first discussion I have with a client. I know it can feel intimidating, but my goal is to ensure clients know exactly what to expect – no surprises. It also allows me to explore ways to reduce overall costs,” she says. “If clients have inherited jewelry, I can often reimagine those items into something new or apply them toward the final cost of an entirely new piece. I aim to be as flexible as possible and fully believe in honesty and transparency with pricing.”

A one-of-a-kind experience

For Robin’s clients, the process of creating custom jewelry is often just as meaningful as the final product. Working closely with clients, getting to know them, and helping bring their designs to life is what keeps her motivated and inspired. The custom design process takes anywhere from three to nine weeks to complete, depending on the project’s complexity, and is broken down into five key steps:

  1. Initial client concept and budget discussion: The first step in any project is exploring design ideas and budget.
  2. Inspiration and start of the design process: If clients choose a special gem from Robin’s inventory, she often has a few ideas in mind. If clients bring vintage jewelry, she begins by disassembling the pieces and finding inspiration.
  3. Client sketches, CAD 3D renderings, wax molds, and design approval: Once Robin has a clear vision, she provides clients with design sketches. After approval, clients receive a full CAD 3D rendering, which Robin says “really brings an idea to life.” Wax molds are sometimes provided when needed.
  4. Custom creation: Once designs are approved, Robin begins work checking in with clients along the way.
  5. Project completion: Clients are presented with the finished product, with final alterations if needed. Care instructions, specific to the custom piece, are provided.

Robin encourages clients to give as much lead time as possible on custom projects, ideally no less than eight weeks. However, she can accommodate shorter timelines when necessary. With the holidays just a few months away, now is the perfect time to start planning a truly unforgettable gift for yourself or a loved one.
