“We’re not a large company; our owners founded this community with the vision of providing specialized, high-quality dementia care. We invest more to do good things consistently,” says Wayne Purdom, Vice President of Brand and Experience.
Fieldstone Communities stands out in its approach to dementia care, offering a blend of safety, personalized programming and a deep understanding of its residents’ needs, ensuring a dignified and fulfilling life for those with dementia.
Intentional design for independence and security
At Fieldstone Communities every aspect is intentionally designed to enhance the independence and security of its residents. “Everything in our community, from common areas to private apartments, is secure yet offers all the comforts of home,” Purdom says.
The design ensures that no one has to worry about loved ones wandering or being in an unsecured environment. Accommodating about 40 individuals, the residence offers a routine that includes breakfast, lunch and dinner, and various activities throughout the day, all within a safe and monitored setting.
Enhanced physical safety
Safety is paramount in the facility’s design.
“Our single-level layout eliminates tripping hazards, and our wide-open hallways ensure clear visibility, further increasing the safety of our residents,” Purdom points out. This thoughtful architecture is a significant advantage over traditional home settings, especially for those with mobility challenges.
Unique programming and personalized care
Fieldstone Communities prides itself on its unique programming, which fosters meaningful interactions. “We deeply understand our residents, tailoring activities to their preferences, like incorporating their favorite music into their daily routine,” Purdom says.
The staff is trained to recognize various dementia symptoms and provide dignified, personalized care. “Dementia can manifest in many forms, from wandering to hallucinations. Our team is skilled in managing these symptoms respectfully and effectively,” he adds.
Purdom recalls the story of a resident who was particularly agitated due to dementia. “We knew from interviewing his family that he loved a certain brand of ginger ale.” The staff were navigating a difficult night of his dementia-induced agitation, a caregiver remembered this information and ran to the supermarket to pick-up a 6 pack of the brand he liked.
She came back with 2 bottles of ginger ale and he sat down by the fire and talked with her as if nothing had happened. “It’s about thinking empathetically and yet staying above the agitation that home caregivers might find challenging to maintain.”
