Many people living with a loved one with dementia may be unaware that there’s a community on Bainbridge Island providing memory care services that can bring enrichment and vibrancy to their lives.
“Even if they are aware of us, some people feel they can give better care to their loved ones at home,” says Wayne Purdom, Regional Director of Operations at Fieldstone Communities on Bainbridge Island. “However, providing proper care for someone with dementia is very hard, unless you have the kind of expertise, facility and community we have here.”
The Fieldstone Communities team provides around-the-clock, engaging, compassionate care focused on residents with Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia.
The unique building design incorporates innovative technologies and spacious apartments, common areas and a neighborhood where residents can interact and discover in a secure environment.
“The building has differentiated areas that are well-lit with color-coded walls and wide hallways to assist with navigation and make our residents feel comfortable and safe,” Purdom says. “The town square and outdoor spaces are also purpose-built to provide a secure environment.”
Life enrichment programs at Fieldstone support the social, intellectual, spiritual and physical well-being of residents, with programs promoting cognitive, sensory and physical development, while providing opportunities for engagement. Music therapy, aromatherapy and regularly planned exercise and outings also keep residents active and engaged.
“Our Life Enrichment Director gets to know each of our residents and engages them in activities that are meaningful to them,” Purdom says. “For example if someone is a big Mariners fan, we make sure they get to watch the games, or for a Glen Miller fan we might play In the Mood for them during mealtimes.”
Residents enjoy gourmet dining prepared by passionate chefs, with delicious, healthy meals and snacks and beverages available 24/7.
“We provide dietician-approved menus while at the same time adjusting for residents’ likes and dislikes,” Purdom says. “We take into account the fact that some residents may have trouble with chewing or color differentiation while still providing meals that are tasty and nutritious.”
Fieldstone’s memory care also includes around-the-clock professional care, with nursing assessments and individualized care for people anywhere on their memory care journey.
“We work together to provide a life that’s joyful and vibrant, both for our residents and their loved ones,” Purdom says. “Families are free to participate in meals and activities and be a part of the lives of our residents as much as they want.
“We take this seriously, and we love what we do. We’re here to help with some of life’s most difficult problems, and to create a place where our residents don’t just survive but thrive!”
