2 charged in organized theft ring

It was an offer they couldn’t refuse: $3,450 in items for $44, and a $1,000 scope for $3.99.

Except they were caught.

Two 20-year-old Bremerton men were in Kitsap County Superior Court Dec. 3 charged with first-degree organized retail theft.

They each face 10 years in prison and $20,000 in fines. One’s bail was $150,000 while the other’s was $55,000.

Court records say Kitsap deputies responded to the Sportsman’s Warehouse in Silverdale Dec. 2 at 11:58 a.m. The internal investigator said he was investigating five people, including three employees, regarding theft of almost $18,300 in merchandise from mid-October to mid-November.

The investigator found that Suspect 1 was in possession of an abnormal number of gift cards. Each one originated from a return with no receipt. Items included a Stealth Revolver trail camera and two rifle scopes.

CCTV footage shows Suspect 1 would take items to Suspect 2 at the cash register, and the item would either not be scanned or tickets switched for a lower price. The gift cards were used to purchase multiple firearms.

Another officer’s report says on Nov. 15 Suspect 2 exited the store with a shopping cart full of merchandise that had not been purchased. On Oct. 22 he was observed taking shoes, clothing, hunting apparel and camping gear. Merchandise worth about $3,450 was purchased for about $44. On Oct. 28 he bought a scope worth $1,000 for $3.99. He later returned a scope without a receipt and received the full value on a gift card.
