In other parts of the country, summer isn’t summer without the neighborhood pool.

It’s where summer birthdays are celebrated and poolside barbecues happen.

For kids and adults alike, it’s the best spot for alternately soaking up the sun and cooling down.

On Bainbridge, kids instead jump off the Point White pier or test how long they can last in the shocking “refreshment” of the Puget Sound before rushing out again.

That’s about it. There is no perfect sunbathing patio, kiddie water playground or poolside picnic table.

At Pleasant Beach Village in Lynwood Center, though, that will all soon change.

“There really isn’t, at least from my perspective, there isn’t anything like this on the island,” said John Jacobi, the owner of the family-friendly shopping and community center.

“There’s nothing there that says kid-friendly as this will be.”

By spring 2015, Jacobi said, a community pool complete with a hot tub, kiddie pool, picnic tables with barbecue grills and shower facilities will be open for its first visitors.

“The reason we did it, we talked to an awful lot of people in the community,” Jacobi said. “And they expressed an interest in having a community center … So that’s what we’ve have designed.”

Once the pool is complete, visitors will be able to park behind the existing shopping strip on Lynwood Center Road.

There, at the top of the hill, is what Jacobi says is the perfect sunspot for a pool. The sun rises, reaches its highest spot and sets without any obstruction from buildings or trees.

Like the rest of Pleasant Beach, the new community pool will be a family-friendly space and will include several features fit for families all shapes and sizes.

The shallow wading pool will be three feet at its deepest and include spray-and-squirt water play installations.

On one side of the pool will be five or six cabanas with picnic tables and grills, an ideal setup for summer parties.

Just behind the cabanas will be an open garden where families enjoying the cabanas can continue sprawl out.

On the other side of the patio will also be a hot tub and a fireplace that visitors can enjoy in the evening hours.

Behind the hearth will be the second most prominent feature of the pool, after the pool itself. A two-story community center will provide locker rooms for women and men, showers and possibly a gym.

“This building is to accommodate what I think will be the needs of the community,” Jacobi said.

“If you’re going to do it, you might as well do it right,” he added.

The overall project will be in the neighborhood of $1.5 million to $2 million to build, Jacobi said.

“The key to it is getting enough people to pay the dues to pay the expenses,” Jacobi said. “And we think that that’s possible.”

Jacobi said that the pool’s patrons will pay a one-time initiation fee and monthly membership dues thereafter.

Otherwise, it will be open to members within the Pleasant Beach neighborhood and Bainbridge Island as a whole.

Since it will not be a competitive pool where swimming teams use the facilities, the community pool will be open on a seasonal basis.

Visitors will have access from May to September.

The worth of this pool, however, will be more than the dollar expense, Jacobi said.

“This is a family-friendly pool,” he said. “The whole idea is for families, to not only come and go swimming or little kids to have a kid pool that they can enjoy, but families come down and cook their dinner or hot dogs.”

It’s also one-of-a-kind, he added.

“There’s the Wing Point swimming pool, but that’s a different kind of thing,” he said.

“That’s a golf club. This is not a golf club. This is a community center, if you will, and there’s really nothing on the south end of the island. And there’s quite a population base here.”
