Agate Pass Bridge work finished, bridge reopens

Clean-up work on the Agate Pass Bridge has wrapped up three days ahead of schedule and the lane closures on Highway 305 have come to an end, the Washington State Department of Transportation announced Tuesday afternoon.

Work on the bridge began Feb. 16 and the closure of one lane on the two-lane span that connects Bainbridge Island with the Kitsap Peninsula prompted long delays for travelers on both sides of the bridge during daytime hours.

“We appreciate drivers’ patience and assistance,” said Kevin Dayton, regional administrator for the agency. “They play a key role in our success, and avoiding the bridge during the work was a big reason why we were able to get it done early.”

State officials said approximately six tons of dirt and debris was removed during the work.

Crews also replaced outdated navigational lighting system with new LED lights, removed concrete near the sidewalk to facilitate future bridge inspections and maintenance, and cleaned and spot-treated rusted areas on the span’s steel truss to prevent future corrosion.

State transportation workers will return for similar bridge cleaning work on the Agate Pass Bridge in February 2017.
