Arms Around Bainbridge auction to create Olivia Carey Legacy

In 2007, months after Olivia Carey was diagnosed with stage three ovarian cancer, the community rallied to her aid by creating an island-centric fundraiser called Arms Around Bainbridge. For those who wished they could “do something,” the event provided plenty: a 29-mile relay swim around the island.

Since then, the all-volunteer Arms Around Bainbridge has designated new recipients for its annual swim: Kristi Rudolph in 2008; Katsuko Kimura in 2009; and last year, two women, Melanie Sattler and Karen Langman were selectede. A new recipient, Shelley Minor, will benefit from funds raised from this year’s swim on Aug. 20.

Kimura, mother of two, died last year. Sattler, who lost her left lung to cancer in 2006, died April 14.

When Carey’s cancer returned several months ago, Arms Around Bainbridge decided to hold an auction to help with medical expenses. Sadly, Olivia died Thursday morning.

“Although never comfortable taking money or even asking for herself, she was the first to use her story to raise awareness and money for others,” wrote Island Fitness owner Michael Rosenthal in a letter to “Friends of Olivia.”

“She loved the name of ‘Arms’ because she got that it was strong arms swimming around the island, and loved the metaphor of loving arms embracing the community and embracing her.”

The auction will still take place, now in Carey’s honor, and 100 percent of the money raised will go to create the Arms Around Bainbridge/Olivia Carey Legacy said Arms board member Heather Burger.

The auction is scheduled from 6-8 p.m. Saturday, May 21 at Island Fitness, 190 Madison Ave., where Carey worked as a personal trainer.
