The Bainbridge Island City Council voted unanimously Wednesday night to move forward with a $101,756 contract with Stripe Rite, Inc. as part of the city’s 2013 road striping project, allowing the company to repaint center and edge lines on approximately 80 miles of roadway.

The cost of the contract will include the cost of traffic control.

On May 14, the city accepted bids for the roadwork; Specialized Pavement Marking Inc. of Tualatin, Ore. bid $145,736; Apply-A-Line of Pacific, Wash., bid $103,542. The city went with the least expensive bidder, Stripe Rite of Sumner.

Prior to the city’s meeting, City Manager Doug Schulze told Interim Public Works Director John Cunningham to look for alternative ways in the years ahead to get the city’s road-striping work completed.

Councilwoman Debbi Lester said the city should consider having the city’s roads striped by Kitsap County, as the county already handles that activity for other cities and isn’t in the business to make money.

“It would be my hope … that we can possibly see if there’s opportunity to work with them, as they are a nonprofit,” Lester said.
