Selected reports from the Bainbridge Island Police Department blotter.
FRIDAY, OCT. 5
1:30 p.m. A 54-year-old Bainbridge Island man drove his 2003 Ford F150 off the road while traveling west onto Bucklin Hill Road from Eagle Harbor Drive.
He began to accelerate to go up the hill when his rear tires lost traction. The truck then crossed the oncoming lane and went into a ditch, finally coming back onto the shoulder facing the opposite direction.
Neither the driver nor the passenger were injured.
The truck was towed from the scene.
8:57 p.m. Police were called to a home on Harborcrest Drive NE, where a man said a mysterious stranger had been found on his property.
The man said the stranger, a younger man, had seemed disoriented and did not give straight answers to questions about his presence there. The homeowner continued asking the stranger, who asked for permission to sleep in the man’s garage, questions until he suddenly left, nervous that the police had been called.
After a quick search of the area police found the mysterious stranger and questioned him. He told police he’d been asking for a place to stay. He said he was from Oregon and had been staying with friends on Bainbridge. When asked why he was still there if he was no longer visiting, the man said he was stuck because there were no more ferries.
When told the ferry runs until about 2 a.m., the man said, “Oh.”
Though he claimed to have no identification, and hesitated when giving police his full name and date of birth, when threatened with arrest for obstruction he quickly produced an ID.
The man was from Oregon and had no record of prior criminal activity. He explained that he’d recently dropped out of college and decided to “bounce around a little bit.” He told police he wanted to explore the Pacific Northwest for a while, and that he’d go back to his parents’ house when he got bored.
A copy of “Into the Wild” was found in his sweatshirt pocket. Also, a rock was found in his front pocket, but he gave no explanation for having it.
Police gave him a courtesy ride to the ferry terminal.
