Bainbridge blotter | Bitcoin extortion

Selected reports from the Bainbridge Island Police Department blotter.

THURSDAY, MAY 17

10:09 a.m. A 58-year-old Bainbridge Island man reported he’d been the target of an attempted extortion scheme.

The man received a letter, he said, instructing him to send $8,500 in Bitcoin to an anonymous “Bitcoin Wallet,” or the sender (who called themselves “GreyFlare-78”) would release embarrassing secret information about the man and his wife and family.

The man researched similar incidents online and called the police.

The envelope the letter came in was postmarked Memphis, Tennessee.

A report was filed.

FRIDAY, MAY 18

6 p.m. A red mountain bike was stolen from the Kitsap Transit Bike Barn at the Winslow ferry terminal.

The owner locked the bike there over the weekend. The man who runs the barn said he saw it there Friday afternoon and believed it was there Saturday, but when the owner returned Sunday, it was gone.

The lock attached to the bike was also gone.

The estimated value of the bike and lock is about $350.
