Bainbridge blotter | Scammers target island woman

Selected reports from the Bainbridge Island Police Department blotter.

TUESDAY, JULY 31

2:10 p.m. A 72-year-old Bainbridge Island woman came to the police station to report an instance of internet fraud.

The woman said she’d recently downloaded an application to her iPhone which had apparently stolen her account information and sent it to a group of scammers.

They contacted her, the woman said, impersonating Apple customer support and asked her to purchase a $200 iTunes give card and tell them the number.

The woman then realized she’d been hacked somehow and became doubly concerned when she learned the hackers had her Social Security number.

Police advised the woman cancel any credit cards she’d used in relation to her interactions with the application or the scammers and contact her bank.

A report was filed.

MONDAY, AUG. 6

11:54 a.m. A 76-year-old Bainbridge Island man came to the police station to report a vehicle prowl.

The man said he was missing his vehicle insurance information and disabled vehicle placard from his gold 1987 Chevrolet El Camino. He said they were most likely stolen sometime after July 31 while he was parked at either a grocery story or an auto parts store in Poulsbo or possibly Battle Point Park on Bainbridge. Otherwise, he said, his car was kept secured in a garage.

A report was filed.
