Bainbridge briefly

Night Out

National Night Out on Bainbridge Island will take place from 5-8 p.m. Aug. 1 at Town Square.

The annual event promotes police-community partnerships and camaraderie to make neighborhoods safer and more caring places to live.

There will be business and organizational informational booths and activities for kids. Free hot dogs and ice cream will be available. A police car, fire truck and K9 officer Whitney will also be on hand.

Pickleball tourney

With nearly 500 registrations from around the world, the 4th Annual Bainbridge Island Pickleball Founders Tournament is set for Aug. 9-13.

Presented by BI Historical Museum, the USAPA-sanctioned tourney starts at 8 a.m. daily.

Spectators can watch for free at Battle Point Park. There will also be vendors, hospitality tents and food trucks, plus a beer garden that Saturday and Sunday from 3-8 p.m.

The museum is giving tours of the original Court 1 where the first pickleball game was played in 1965. The tours are $20 and benefit the museum, with sign-ups at the museum tent. The tent also includes displays on the history of the game and will be organizing free beginners’ clinics for every age.

It’s all part of celebrating where the fastest-growing sport in America started with simple garage-made wooden paddles and a wiffle ball. For a schedule of events or to register for the tournament go to www.bainbridgehistory.org.

African music

The first woman Kora virtuoso will perform at Rolling Bay Hall in Bainbridge Island at 7 p.m. Aug. 6.

Hailing from The Gambia in West Africa, Sona Jobarteh is a pioneer of the kora —an exquisite 21-stringed harp-like instrument that embodies the rich cultural heritage of her homeland, a news release from WEAVE says.

Breaking from a seven-century-old tradition of Griot families in Africa that reserved the instrument for men only, Jobarteh is not only the first professional woman Kora virtuoso but also a deft innovator who “blends traditional music, blues and Afropop to impressive effect,” the release says.

Her soul-stirring compositions seamlessly blend traditional African melodies with contemporary elements, creating a mesmerizing musical journey that transcends borders, the release says, adding her inspiring humanitarian goals and activism is at the root of her performance. She’s been featured on 60 Minutes and CNN.

It will be the first outdoor concert for WEAVE, which promotes cultural events locally.

Cost is $27 in advance, $36 the day of the show. Kids, teens and people with disabilities are $13.50. The hall is at 10598 NE Valley Road. For details go to weavepresents.org

Scavenger hunt

In honor of Kitsap Bank’s 115th Anniversary, it is hosting a community-wide scavenger hunt July 31-Aug. 11.

Each glass starfish hand-crafted by Lisa Stirrett’s Creative Warrior Studio will be hidden in parks and beaches in the communities the bank serves. Two starfish will be released each day except for Aug. 8, the bank’s actual anniversary date, when there will be six starfish released.

Kitsap Bank will be releasing clues to the hidden starfish daily throughout the hunt on Facebook and Instagram.

The glass starfish symbolize the bank’s commitment to #causegood in the communities it serves.

Inspired by the “Starfish Story,” the starfish serve as a reminder that everyone has the ability to make a difference. With every starfish the community finds, Kitsap Bank will be donating $50 to a local environmentally focused nonprofit in the finder’s name.

Victim identified

The Kitsap County Medical Examiner’s office has identified the man who died in a tent fire in Bremerton July 12 as Steven Hicks, 52.

Due to extensive thermal injuries, identification as well as cause and manner of death have been pending due to the need for records comparisons, toxicology results and outside testing.
