School board

The Bainbridge Island school board has named Kelly Cancialosi to be director for District 1 following Lynn Smith’s recent resignation.

“Kelly spoke directly to our strengths and challenges as a district and her discussion of our District Improvement Plan was spot on. She will be a strong advocate for our students and staff and is a welcome addition to our board,” school board president Mark D. Emerson said.

Cancialosi is a corporate attorney and owns her own legal practice. Cancialosi and her family have lived on BI since 2012, and her son attends Sakai Intermediate School. She serves on various PTO boards.

She will serve the remainder of Smith’s term through November.

Winning photo

For 15 long seconds, photographer Alisa Steck of Bainbridge Island crossed her fingers. She could only hope the woman wouldn’t move.

She didn’t. And Steck’s photo, “Woman and Waterfall,” turned out. The image of Marymere Falls in Olympic National Park won her the $500 Curator’s Choice Award in the “Wet: Reflections on Water” photography show.

“I was ecstatic,” Steck said of her win at the exhibition through April 30 at Northwind Art’s Jeanette Best Gallery, 701 Water St. in Port Townsend. “When photographing waterfalls, I always shoot very long exposures to give the falls an ethereal feel. This image is a real-life capture of a moment in time, not a setup with a model.”
