The Bainbridge Island City Council has approved a second contract with Mackenzie Inc., the consultants hired to assess which site and building floor plan will work best for a new Bainbridge police station.

Under an almost $30,000 agreement, the consultants will now conduct a site ranking study for a new police station and possibly a new courthouse.

“The results of this survey aren’t intended to identify the one winner, or the one best site,” said Deputy City Manager Morgan Smith.

“It’s just another way to take a look at the three options.”

The consultants have narrowed down the search of possible sites for a public safety building to three locations near city hall and the current site of the Bainbridge Island Fire Department’s Station 21 on Madison Avenue, where a combined fire-police station can be built.

Under the new contract, the consultants will take a closer look at the list of potential locations and detail how each option stands under various categories of pros and cons.

“What we’re trying to do is set the council up to have the right information to say, ‘When I made such and such choice, I made it knowing it scores well on these things I care about,'” Smith explained.

The council unanimously approved the site ranking study contract in the amount of $29,400 at its meeting Monday.

The new contract is in addition to an earlier $12,000 agreement the council approved earlier this summer for the consultants to identify the potential sites.
