The Bainbridge Island City Council will consider changing the name of the Japanese American memorial at Pritchard Park during this week’s meeting.

The resolution will incorporate the word “exclusion” and change the name to Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial.

In the initial enabling legislation in 2008, the word was not included.

It was subsequently left out of the National Park Service’s official material for the site.

The council will consider a resolution Monday that acknowledges the importance of incorporating “exclusion” into the official name.

The resolution states, “It is the desire of the (Bainbridge Island Japanese American) Association, of the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Community, and of the survivors of the exclusion of members of our community during World War II that the Memorial name expressly acknowledge the exclusion experience.”

Once the name is officially changed at the local and county level, the National Park Service will update its material to match.

The city council meets at 7 p.m. every Monday at city hall.

The resolution will be considered during the “consent agenda” portion of the session at 9:15 p.m.
