Bainbridge council OKs purchase of $13,000 sculpture for Waterfront Park

Hand, meet pocketbook.

The Bainbridge Island City Council decided to buy a piece of art at its workstudy session Tuesday.

The council, with limited discussion, voted 7-0 to buy “Hand in Hand,” a sculpture by Will Robinson that was installed last year in Waterfront Park as part of the city’s “Something New” art program.

City officials plan to keep the sculpture in place at the entrance to Waterfront Park by the community center.

The artwork was one of three installed by the city last year.

The purchase was recommended by the Public Art Committee, a subcommittee of the Arts and Humanities Bainbridge board of directors.

According to the committee, the shape and scale of the artwork is perfect for Waterfront Park. The committee said earlier the art is a “wonderful stand-alone piece and/or introduction to a future sculpture garden” in the city park.

At Tuesday’s council meeting, AHB representatives said artists who create outdoor pieces are relatively rare in the area, and noted that Robinson is based on Bainbridge Island.

The sculpture will now become part of the city’s permanent public art portfolio, a collection that includes Tribute Baskets by artists Christine Clarke at Waypoint Park, and Rainbringer, by Craig Jacobrown, at the intersection of High School Road and Madison Avenue.
