The Bainbridge Island City Council will read the first draft of temporary regulations for marijuana businesses at its meeting this week.

At a study session earlier this month, the council decided to implement a six-month moratorium on marijuana grow operations and interim rules for retailers, processors and medical marijuana “collective gardens.”

The council asked city staff at the session to come back with temporary regulations that would limit recreational marijuana retailers and processors to areas with business-industrial zoning and also include regulations for medical marijuana locations.

A temporary moratorium for grow operations, the council decided, would give the city more time to consider appropriate locations.

After the first reading of the draft ordinance on the temporary regulations, the council will also schedule a public hearing to further discuss what needs to be included in the ordinance.

The city council meets at 7 p.m. every Wednesday.

The council will discuss the moratorium and interim regulations at 7:30 p.m., during the “ordinances” portion of the agenda.
