The Bainbridge Island City Council will conduct the first reading of several Comprehensive Plan amendments at this week’s session.

Planning Director Kathy Cook will bring forward five amendments ranging from historic preservation to land-use changes.

One amendment that will be discussed at council Wednesday has picked up neighborhood criticism near Pritchard Park.

The president of Bainbridge Island Marina applied for a land-use change on his boatyard property to change the zoning to “water dependent-industrial.”

The marina operates as a boatyard and boathouse alongside the Bainbridge Island Yacht Club near Pritchard Park. It currently sits on two parcels designated as “Open Space Residential” zoning.

A land-use change would allow an expansion of the facilities on property already-owned by the marina.

Staff presented the amendment request and application necessities to the council at the Oct. 16 study session.

As a requisite to the application, shortly after the session, the city received approval from the Department of Ecology on Nov. 8 for designating the shoreline area surrounding the marina as an urban area.

One neighbor has argued that the marina as it presently operates disrupts the view on Eagle Harbor and claimed it has devalued shoreline properties.

The city reviews and processes amendments to the Bainbridge Island Comprehensive Plan once every three years. In accordance with the cycle, 2013 is an amendment year.

The city council will discuss the Bainbridge Island Marina land-use change and other amendments to the Comprehensive Plan at 7:35 p.m. at this Wednesday’s council session.

The council meets at 7 p.m. every Wednesday at city hall.
