Deputy City Manager Morgan Smith will get another look by the council for the position of city manager.
The council — which rejected a two-year contract for Smith at its last meeting in September — is now considering a revised agreement that includes a modified severance package.
The new contract would install Smith as city manager starting Oct. 3, and would expire Dec. 31, 2020.
Earlier, council members said they couldn’t support the first proposed employment agreement due to the size of the severance package included in the contract.
The first contract said Smith would have her contract paid out if she was fired without cause, and she would continue to get her city manager’s salary through Dec. 31, 2020.
The new contract notes that Smith will receive compensation for 18 months of her salary, or through Dec. 31, 2020 (or whichever time period is shorter), if she is terminated from her job without cause before the end of the contract.
Smith would also be paid another $3,000 per month, to be prorated from the date of termination through Dec. 31, 2020, “to compensate for the loss of deferred compensation and the loss of other miscellaneous benefits due to the change in employee’s employment status,” according to the new contract.
The base salary for the new contract is set at $174,000, but would rise to $184,000 in six months “upon a determination by the city council that the employee has successfully performed the functions of the city manager position.”
According to city officials, the new contract was drafted following additional discussions between Smith, Mayor Kol Medina and Deputy Mayor Joe Deets. Those talks happened after the council shot down the first draft of the contract Sept. 25.
Bainbridge has been without a city manager since Doug Schulze resigned and took a job as city manager in Banning, California. His last day working for Bainbridge was Sept. 21.
The city council will review the contract at its study session meeting Tuesday, Oct. 2.
