Journalist David Brancaccio is a new breed of cartographer. Responding to the broken economy, he embarked on a national search for people and communities that are pioneering fresh solutions.

And, good news: Bainbridge is on the map.

“Bainbridge is fortunate to be among the leaders of this movement for quite some time,” said Fran Korten, Executive Director of Yes! Magazine. The Bainbridge nonprofit publishes a print and online magazine focused on sharing examples of a new economy where “locally rooted businesses are responsive and responsible to the communities they serve.”

Bainbridge Island is one such economy, where locally owned businesses far outnumber big-box and chain stores.

Under the Sustainable Bainbridge umbrella, some of these locally owned businesses have organized as Sustainable Business Network, and SBN is one of the organizations listed on Brancaccio’s map.

“What I love when I go shopping is when I can speak to the owner – at the clothing store, the grocery store, the paint store,” Korten said.

Islanders can get a sneak preview of Brancaccio’s documentary, Fixing the Future even before it airs on KCTS, at a special community screening at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 18 at IslandWood.

Korten will facilitate the evening , and her husband David Korten, Chair and Co-founder of Positive Futures Network which publishes Yes! Magazine, and who is featured in the film, will be on hand for a Q&A session after the program.
